Protests erupt in Brazil over high cost of hosting World Cup

More than 100,000 Brazilians took to the streets June 18 to protest police crackdowns, shoddy public services and the high cost of the World Cup.

Throngs of Brazilians filled the streets June 18 in more than half-a-dozen cities to protest high costs of hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup, among other things. The protests coincided with the start of the FIFA Confederations Cup, a test event. Some estimates put the crowd in Sao Paolo as high as 100,000 or more.

“The problem has never been the increase of 10 cents at the turnstiles… We have problems with ports, airports, public transportation, health, education [while] the level of taxation is very high.” – Gilberto de Souza, chief editor of the Correio do Brasil

The costs of preparing for the World Cup and the Olympics has fueled resentment at rising costs of public transportation as well as an inflation rate of 6.5%. Members of the Free Pass Movement rejected government requests to negotiate, instead calling for new rallies on the evening of June 17.
