Previewing Bucs-Ravens, Positional Battles, and Why Selvie Got the Boot
We talked about what fans can expect tonight in terms of playing time for veterans all the way down to rookies, including the injured, as well as what questions the Bucs hope to have answered in terms of positional battles.
One question — the kicking situation. Two-time Super Bowl winner Lawrence Tynes has been slowed by a toe injury and has had some noticeable misses in practice, opening the door for Derek Dimke to possibly earn the job.
Another question that needs to be answered, and this pertains to an entire unit rather than a position, is the pass rush. The Bucs let free agent Michael Bennett after last season in hopes that Da’Quan Bowers could be an every-down player. Coach Schiano called Bowers out at the podium this week, saying he needs to be more consistent.
Bowers, a starter, may not see a ton of playing time tonight, but behind him, there are guys who need to show they can be valuable contributors, including Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, who started 14 games last season, Aaron Morgan, and rookies William Gholston, and Steven Means.
With so many question marks up front, I’ve had a number of Bucs fans ask me why former USF All-American George Selvie was released by the team in May. Selvie was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago and had a monster two-sack performance in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.
We talked about why Selvie has bounced around so many teams in his four-year career and why the Bucs released him before OTAs and on-field practices began. Was this a case of Tampa Bay’s coaching staff putting too much emphasis on the weight room and positional drills, and not enough on actual on-field play?
Or is it just that the Cowboys’ ‘Tampa-Two’ installation and Rod Marinelli’s coaching are a better fit?
