Players Lounge With Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

This week I sat down with Denver Broncos corner back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. We talked about his experience in Philadelphia, what it’s like to play in the Superbowl and giving back to his hometown.
DG: How does playing against Peyton Manning in practice help you against opposing QB’s?
DRC: He places the ball where only his wideouts can make a play on it, he’s very accurate, and dictates the tempo very well. So when I’m in a game it’s easier for me to react.
DG: What are you learning from a guy like Champ Bailey?
DRC: Just how to be a pro and show up to work. Honestly, how to just work hard day in and day out.
DG: You had a rough go in Philly last season, why? Was it more about personnel or scheme that didn’t fit your style of play?
DRC: Philly was rough from a team stand point. Never really got going as a team ya know, it was definitely a learning experience.
DG: The word distraction is used a lot in pro sports, how much does an off the field distraction disrupt the team?
DRC: Its big! We count on each other to be accountable, when a player has off the field issues then its brought to the medias attention and that plays big on the team.
DG: Many people dream to play in the NFL, is it any different then the way you may have imagined when you were younger?
DRC: Naw, I knew it would be hard work. It looks fun which it is but it’s a ton of hard work.
DG: What do you think is the biggest misconception fans may have of pro athletes?
DRC: That its all fun and games, when actually its hard work and time consuming.
DG: You played in Superbowl XLIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers, what was that liked?
DRC: Now that’s a dream come true man. It’s an emotion u can’t explain.
DG: There are more mobile quarterbacks in the NFL now. Guys like Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick. Do you find it harder to prepare for a mobile QB or prototypical pocket passer?
DRC: Mobile, because he can break the pocket and create more time for his wide receiver to get open. Making it more difficult on the secondary.
DG: Who’s the toughest wide receiver to you’ve matched up against?
DRC: They are all tough bro. I like to play against Carolina Panthers Steve Smith though. He’s a little guy with a big play mentality. That means he’s going to work every play.
DG: You had a celebrity/charity basketball game this past summer with Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields. Your both from the Bradenton, FL area. What’s it like to be able to give back to the community your from?
DRC: Its a blessing, it gives me a chance to interact with my family and friends. Just allows everyone to have a good time.
DG: Now you know before we’re done I have to ask you an NBA question. Who’s your favorite player and who wins it all this year?
DRC: Kevin Garnett from the Brooklyn Nets and the Oklahoma City Thunder.Players Lounge With Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie by David Gaulman
