Phoenix Coyotes to become "Arizona" Coyotes next season
The Phoenix Coyotes have established another toe hold to stay in Glendale, or more specifically Arizona.
The team announced via Twitter that they will be dropping the Phoenix name and adding Arizona to match their NFL counterpart the Arizona Cardinals.
Owner Anthony Leblanc who purchased the team recently after many potential suitors fell through said the move is to help encourage more fans from all over the state to embrace and support the team.
Becoming the Arizona Coyotes makes sense for us since we play our games in Glendale and the city is such a great partner of ours. WE also want to be recognized as not just the hockey team for Glendale or Phoenix, but the team for the entire state of Arizona and the Southwest, Leblanc said.
The change of name was also discussed in negotiations with city of Glendale during Leblancs attempt to purchase the team.
For those expecting a new look or design, be prepared to be disappointed as the team will not alter their jerseys except to add a patch with Glendale on it. The patch will debut during the 2014 preseason.
