Penn State Athletic Director Dave Joyner says there are plenty of good candidates for the job opening.

This morning at media gathering that included Sports Talk Florida, Dave Joyner, Penn State Director of Athletics, said that the university’s  hunt for a new head coach has begun. He praised former PSU head coach Bill O’Brien for all he had done to improve the university and wished him well in his new job as the head coach for the Houston Texans.

Penn State established a search committee that is looking nationwide for the next head coach for PSU football. Joyner was quick to say that they feel the university will have this opening filled in a matter of a couple of weeks.

Former Bucs head coach Greg Schiano is expected to be a leading contender for the Penn State opening. Prior to being the head coach at Rutgers, Schiano served as an assistant to Joe Paterno in State College. Joiner was clear that having a background at Penn State was a plus but not a must. The key was to get the best coach possible.

The Penn State AD was clear that he hopes that the next coach will be in it for the long run, He did understand why O’Brien left, because of the draw of the NFL. But there is a hope that the next Penn State man will be someone who wants to be a long time college coach.

Joyner told Sports Talk Florida that a number of top name coaches representatives have already reached out to him in hopes of getting an interview.  We have a process in place and each candidate will be given due consideration, with the idea of getting the right man to lead Penn State for years to come.

Along with Texas there is no doubt that the Penn State job is one of the best in all of college football.  Penn State will pay big bucks, they are a Big Ten team with one of the best fan bases in college football.

In 2013 Penn State with a stadium that can hold over 100,000 fans finished fifth in overall attendance in all of college football. The team is back of solid footing after the Sandusky Scandal and over the next two years they will return to normal when it comes to scholarships that they can offer.

As many of you know, Penn State has a loyal fan base in Central Florida. They have always been well supported at both the Outback and Capital One Bowls and they love to recruit in Florida.   As for the Bucs fans, we will have to see if they are interested in  Schiano. I know many fans would love to see him get the job, and I am sure that before the end of the month we will know.
