Past two AL Cy Young winners trade bait?

TigersGM Dave Dombrowski told FOX Sports Jon Paul Morosi on Tuesday that the team intends for left-hander Drew Smyly to be in its rotation next season the strongest indication yet that Detroit will trade right-hander and soon to be named AL Cy Young winner,Max Scherzer in the off season.

The Tigers will not struggle to generate interest for the likely American League Cy Young winner. The same could be said of the Rays and David Price.

Here is whereScherzer could be a better deal for the clubs who are looking at both he and Price. It will take less to getScherzer than it would to pry Price away from Tampa Bay because after this year he will be a free agent.

So who is in on both pitchers?

The Angles, Diamondbacks, Nationals and maybe the Braves. Each club has the talent in their farm system to pull off a big deal for either pitcher. However, only the Angles and the Nationals have the money it would take to trade and then sign a long term deal with either pitcher.

There is no doubt that bothScherzer or Price will return the Tigers and the Rays a boat load of talent from any team they deal with. The key in both cases are the Tigers and they Rays do not have to trade their star pitcher and need only to do so if the deal is too great to pass up.

Any club that acquires Scherzer this offseason also could extend him a qualifying offer next winter to assure draft-pick compensation and ease the sting of the prospects lost.

The Tigers, meanwhile, remain interested in signing a free-agent closer. They are considering not only Joe Nathan but alsoBrian Wilsonfor that spot, according to major league sources.
