Padres Sign Jason Marquis


SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis on a one-year contract for the 2013 season. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Marquis, 34, made 15 starts for the Padres last season, going 6-7 with a 4.04 ERA (42 ER/93.2 IP) and 79 strikeouts against 28 walks for San Diego. The right-hander began the season with the Minnesota Twins organization, going 2-4 with an 8.47 ERA (32 ER/34.0 IP) over seven starts for Minnesota and 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA (3 ER/14.0 IP) in two starts for Triple-A New Britain. Marquis signed with the Padres as a minor league free agent on May 31 last season, making one start for Double-A San Antonio before joining San Diego. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 23 with a fractured left wrist, missing the remainder of the season.

A veteran of 13 Major League seasons, Marquis was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves as a first-round selection (35th overall) of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft. He has made 20-or-more Major League starts in eight of the past nine seasons. In 348 career games, 289 starts, total, he has gone 112-109 with a 4.60 ERA (921 ER/1803.1 IP) and 1065 strikeouts against 687 walks over parts of his 13 Major League seasons with the Braves (2000-03), St. Louis Cardinals (2004-06), Chicago Cubs (2007-08), Colorado Rockies (2009), Washington Nationals (2010-11), Arizona Diamondbacks (2011), Twins (2012) and Padres (2012).

With today’s announcement the Padres currently have a full 40-man roster, as well as two players on the restricted list.
