Orlando Magic's Glen Davis return is nearing

Glen_Davis_Magic_2013Orlando Magic's Glen 'Big Baby' Davis is practicing with the team and it's only a matter of time before he returns.

Davis broke his left foot during the first quarter of the Magics game against the Knicks on Jan. 30, 2013. Davis underwent surgery to insert a screw to stabilize and repair his fifth metatarsal on Feb. 1, 2013. He underwent surgery again to replace the same screw in early July. The Magic are being very cautious with Davis return. They want to make sure hes 100 percent before he returns as they dont want him re-injuring his foot.

At the time of his foot injury Davis was averaging 15.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and left the Magic shorthanded, especially on defense. The Magics most successful line up (9-5 record) last season was Jameer Nelson, Arron Afflalo, Maurice Harkless, Davis and Nik Vucevic.

In order to pick up the slack, the young guys stepped up their game. After Davis injury Vucevic started to pick up more double-doubles and even broke a franchise record of 29 rebounds (previously held byShaquille ONeal in 1993 with 28 rebounds.) Rookie Andrew Nicholson made his first NBA start in Davis place on Dec. 21 and saw a lot more playing time as a result.

The Magic will most likely play it safe and start him off with a few minutes and work him up to significant minutes. While Davis transitions back from the injury the power forward position will be covered by Jason Maxiell and Andrew Nicholson.

While Davis may be practicing it doesn't mean he is ready for a game. It will probably be a week or two before Davis suits up for a game.

The Orlando Magic (2-1) beat the New Orleans Pelicans (0-2) 110-90 Friday night. They will host the Brooklyn Nets (1-1) Sunday night at 6 p.m. ET.
