Orlando Magic Roster Preview: Arron Afflalo
The Orlando Magic are going through a rebuilding process, which will take time and a lot of patience.
General Manager Rob Hennigan is rebuilding the team by acquiring young talented players and developing them. While these young players develop, they will need veteran players to step in and guide them.
Shooting guard Arron Afflalo is one of the few veterans that helped the young players on the Magic roster develop last season.
This season, expect to see Afflalo to start at shooting guard but also expect to see rookie Victor Oladipo at shooting guard as he will be tested at both guard positions.
At one point during the off season, Hennigan explored the option of trading Afflalo. One of the biggest rumors was trading Afflalo for the Clippers’ Eric Beldsoe. That deal ended up not working out as the Clippers traded Bledsoe to the Suns. It wouldn’t come to a surprise to most if the Magic traded Afflalo this coming season.
During his time in Orlando, Afflalo has proven he is a leader on and off the court.
Last season, Afflalo led the Magic in various categories by averaging a team high 16.5 points per game, 36 minutes per game and shooting .857 from the free throw line. Throughout the season, he led or tied the team in scoring 24 times, three times in rebounding and six times in assists. Fifty-five out of 64 games he started, he scored in double digits and scored over 20 points in 19 games.
Afflalo a Southern California native exceeds on the court when playing in Los Angeles. He scored a season-high 30 points against Dwight Howard and the L.A. Lakers on Dec. 2, 2012, including a three-point buzzer beater, which tied the game at the half. When the Magic faced the Clippers at Staples Center, Afflalo set a career high of seven assists.
The seven year veteran, was healthy for the first part of the season but dealt with various injuries in the last three months of the season. He missed a total of 16 games after suffering a strain to the left calf in January and later suffering a strained right hamstring in March, which led him to miss the final 12 games of the season.
Afflalo has a five year contract worth a little over $38.5 million. He has three years left on this contract with the last year being a player option. He will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015-16 season.
The preseason is set to being on Oct. 9 when the Orlando Magic take on the New Orleans Pelicans in Jacksonville at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Tickets are on sale now and prices range from $15 to $250.
The Magic will start its 25th ‘Silver Season’ season on the road. They will face the Indiana Pacers (Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. ET) and Minnesota Timberwolves (Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. ET) before returning to the Amway for the season home opener against the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. ET.Orlando Magic Roster Preview: Arron Afflalo by Mary Stevens
