Orlando Getting NHL Minor-League Team

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Officials with the ECHL have approved Orlando for a new NHL-affiliated minor league franchise.

The Orlando Sentinel (http://thesent.nl/uWUib1 ) reports the Board of Governors of the ECHL unanimously approved an Orlando ownership group’s application for a new team Tuesday and says it will begin play in October 2012. The new franchise is yet to be named, but will play its home games at Amway Center.

The new team plans to announce more details, including NHL affiliation agreements in a few weeks. It is also sorting out licensing and copyright issues.

Orlando becomes Florida’s second ECHL team, joining the Florida Everblades in Estero.

San Francisco has also been approved for a new franchise in 2012 and along with Orlando will take the ECHL up to 22 teams next season.
