Orlando City Wins USL Pro Championship in Thrilling Fashion
Orlando City Soccer won their trophy back on Saturday night in front of a record breaking 20,886 screaming fans against the Charlotte Eagles. In the USL Pro Championship match, Orlando city scored seven goals and gave up four. The night would have been different if the team didn’t have Dom Dwyer, Sporting Kansas City loanee, back on the team.
Dom Dwyer was voted the Man of the Match with four goals and an assist. It all started in the 33rd minute when he scored a header off of a corner kick and then found the net again later in the 41st minute with an assist from Erik Ustruck. Going into the second half, the teams were tied 2-2 up until the 58th minute when Charlotte got the ball past Orlando goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo making it 3-2. Not long after, in the 61st minute, Dwyer responded with yet another goal giving him a hat trick. He ended up with one more goal in the game and then Dennis Chin got two and Adama Mbengue scored one himself.
Orlando’s Head Coach Adrian Heath said that it was a little surreal when it came to taking in the championship win because he had never been involved in a game like that in his life.
“First time I’ve been involved in a game where we scored seven goals and I’m not sure it’s going to be enough… it’s more like a basketball score.”
When asked to describe the game, Dwyer said it wasn’t bad.
“It was a crazy game, 7-4, that was crazy, but we don’t care about the score to be honest right now, but you know we won the game and we’re very happy.”
Dennis Chin talked about how the record breaking attendance and great season they had could help with the politics dealing with the future of the MLS.
“Well, obviously 20,000 speaks for itself…that alone and to see the passion of the fans and how loud the stadium was and for our team on and off the field to have a season like this especially at this crucial time shows you that we’re trying our best to do what we need to do on and off the field and in the office, so all we need is the support of the local communities to obviously take the next step.”
Saturday night’s win was the second postseason championship for Orlando City Soccer and one that won’t soon be forgotten.
