Orioles Sign Former Rays OF Delmon Young

According to Roch Kubatko of MASN.com (Twitter) the Baltimore Orioles have invited former Rays Delmon Young and Jack Cust to to join around 15 others at their minicamp at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.

Update: The Orioles have signed Young to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.

Rays_Delmon_Young_2013Delmon Young was the Tampa Bay Devil Rays first round draft pick (first overall) in the 2003 draft. He debuted with the Devil Rays in 2006 and appeared in 162 games with the team in 2007 finishing second to the Red Sox Dustin Pedroia for the AL Rookie of the Year Award. After the 2007 season Y0ung along with infielder Brendan Harris and minor leageu outfielder Jason Pridie were dealt to the Minnesota Twins for pitcher Matt Garza, shortstop Jason Bartlett, and minor league pitcher Eduardo Morlan.

Since leaving the Rays he has played for the Twins, Tigers, and Phillies. In 2013 he opened the season with the Phillies but was released after appearing in 80 games and hitting .261/.302/.397 with eight home runs in 291 plate appearances. He returned to the Rays on a minor league deal but was added to the Rays 25-man squad when rosters expanded on September 1st. In his one month return to the Rays he was an effective right handed DH hitting .258/.329/.452 with three home runs in 70 plate appearances.

Last February 17th the Rays signed Jack Cust to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.  After hitting just .175 (4 for 23) in 10 games he was released by the Rays. He spent 2012 he spent time with the Yankees and Blue Jays Triple-A affiliates hitting a combined .243/.400/.442 with 2o home runs in 493 plate appearances.  He last appeared in the majors with the Mariners in 2011, hitting .214/.344/.329 in 225 at bats.

If the Orioles sign either play it is more than likely it will be a minor league deal with a spring training invite.
