Northwestern's Intent To Unionize Is Recognized By NCAA
It only took the NCAA a couple of hours to respond, as Donald Remy, the Chief Legal Officer, released the following statement:
This union-backed attempt to turn student-athletes into employees undermines the purpose of college: an education. Student-athletes are not employees, and their participation in college sports is voluntary.
The perception of college athletes is a gray area because scholarships are given to participate in athletics, and at the same time, college athletes train, work and practice like professionals.
However, they are called 'college athletes' for a reason: they are in school, playing sports and most importantly, getting an education.
