TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After some fun in the sun this past Tuesday down in Tampa against the Yankees, second-ranked Florida State returns to the diamond this weekend on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium to face in-state rival Miami for a three-game, non-conference series. First pitch on Friday is set for 4:00 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday’s games starting at 2 pm and 1 pm, respectively.
Florida State is off to a 6-0 start to open the 2014 campaign collecting wins against Niagara, Jacksonville and Georgia. The Seminoles are hitting .328 as a team through the first six games with a staff ERA that sits at 2.72. FSU has outscored its opponents 60-16 through the first six games with 24 extra base hits including 19 doubles, two triples and three home runs.
No. 17/14 Miami (4-3) is also coming off an exhibition game this past week falling to the Miami Marlins 5-2 in Jupiter. Last weekend, the Hurricanes took 2-of-3 from the Florida Gators down in Coral Gables. Miami enters the weekend hitting .233 as a team while its pitching staff has posted a 2.57 ERA in 63.0 innings of work.
In the most played series in school history for both teams, Friday’s game marks the 272nd meeting between these two schools as the Seminoles lead the all-time series 145-122-4.
This weekend will mark the first time since 2004 that the two teams will square-off in a non-conference series during the regular season. Before the Hurricanes joined the ACC for the 2004-05 season, FSU and Miami used to play six times a year with three games at each school’s home field (1979-2004).
Since Miami joined the ACC, Florida State leads the series by the slimmest of margins at 16-15-0. The two schools have faced each other four times outside of the regular season as conference foes with three games coming in the ACC Tournament and one at the College World Series.
Florida State has dominated the series in Tallahassee winning five straight including a series sweep in 2012 – the Seminoles’ first sweep of the Hurricanes since 2002 and the first sweep in Tallahassee since 2000. FSU owns a record of 76-54-2 all-time against Miami on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.
Last year, Florida State went into Coral Gables and took two of three from the Hurricanes winning games one and three. The Seminoles have won the last four regular season series from the Hurricanes.
FSU’s Friday starter Luke Weaver made his debut in the weekend rotation last year at Miami going five innings allowing two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in earning a no decision.
The series has been closely contested as of late with FSU winning 11 of the last 19 games. Eleven of those 19 games have been decided by two runs or less with the Noles holding a 7-4 advantage.
This weekend also features two of the NCAA’s top four winningest active Division I coaches in terms of victories in FSU’s Mike Martin (1,776 – 2nd) and Miami’s Jim Morris (1,395 – 4th).
Friday and Saturday’s games will air live on ESPN3 with Sunday’s game to be broadcast over the internet on Seminoles.com All-Access.
