The Boston Bruins hold the best record in the Eastern Conference and the St. Louis Blues hold the best record in the NHL. Unsurprisingly, this week’s NHL Power Rankings are favoring a Boston/St. Louis Stanley Cup Final.
That might not be the matchup that fans of the Blackhawks or the Sharks or the Penguins are hoping for, but what a gift to the game that a finals between St. Louis and Boston would be.
Both sides are led by Cup-winning coaches (Ken Hitchcock, Claude Julien) who worked side-by-side in planning and executing Canada’s flawless defensive system in Sochi, and whose teams play the game the right way: relentless and nasty.
Their two meetings this season were hard-fought battles, and while the Blues took both games by identical 3-2 scores, neither was settled in 60 minutes.
The two best teams in the NHL don’t always play for the championship, but not many people would be shocked if that were to be the case this year.
