The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were back in pads on Monday, regrouping after their first preseason game and getting ready for their second, which will be this Saturday against the Dolphins. Practice appeared to have been cut short by about 30 minutes due to a torrential downpour, but head coach Lovie Smith said the team accomplished everything they needed to for the day.
Please note: Thursday’s practice is from 2-4:30 p.m.
“We didn’t do a two-minute drill at the end, and we cut special teams down a little bit more. We just had a pretty good tempo, sometimes when we go with the no-huddle we get off the field a little bit earlier, but besides that, that’s all we took out,” Smith said.
Highlights from practice included an interception by strong side linebacker Jonathan Casillas off quarterback Mike Glennon in the red zone.
Also during red zone, quarterback Josh McCown delivered a quick strike to wide receiver Mike Evans for a touchdown, showing great concentration as the rain began to pour.
Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins made a nice diving catch along the sideline for about a 6 or 7-yard pickup on a ball thrown by McCown.
Middle linebacker Mason Foster intercepted McCown on a pass deflected by defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.
Defensive end/defensive tackle Da’Quan Bowers and defensive end Steven Means both missed practice due to what Smith described as “upper leg injuries in the groin area.”
Cornerback Mike Jenkins (upper leg) remained sidelined.
Cornerback Alterraun Verner practiced for the second consecutive day after suffering from a hamstring injury early on in camp.
After returning to practice Sunday, cornerback Rashaan Melvin (ankle) missed Monday’s practice due to ankle soreness. “He should be good to go as far as playing this week, but after he had a little more extensive work yesterday, he had some soreness.”
Cornerback Keith Lewis also missed practice due to an ankle injury.
