Bucs QB Josh Freeman Benched in Favor of Mike Glennon

The Mike Glennon era in Tampa Bay may have just begun. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Buccaneers starting quarterback Josh Freeman has been benched in favor of rookie Mike Glennon.

When asked about his quarterback situation Monday, head coach Greg Schiano responded, “Josh [Freeman] is our starter.” He even reiterated it again when asked what it would take to make a change at the QB position. “Josh is our starter. That’s where we are.”

Less than 48 hours later, however, and Schiano’s tune has changed entirely. He has essentially separated himself from a player long-deemed the Bucs’ “franchise quarterback” by general manager Mark Dominik, whom Dominik himself drafted as a first-year GM.

A first-round draft pick in 2009, Freeman had a rocky start to his 2013 season, completing 45.7-percent of his passes. Last week he did not throw a single touchdown pass in the Bucs’ 23-3 loss to the New England Patriots.

Last year Freeman set a single-season passing record for the Bucs, throwing for 4,065 yards, and setting a franchise single season touchdown record with 27 TDs.

In 2010 Freeman led the Bucs to a 10-6 record, throwing 25 touchdowns and just six interceptions, producing the ninth-best touchdown-to-interception ratio in NFL history.

Despite impressive numbers, his 24-35 record with the Bucs did not make a particularly strong case to save him, although Tampa Bay had some documented struggles on defense during his time as a starter.

In this case, it seems less about numbers and more about the culmination of a growing disconnect between him and Schiano, which ultimately led to his benching and the Bucs giving Glennon a look.

A third-round draft pick out of N.C. State, Glennon played significantly in the preseason, creating growing speculation that the franchise was testing the waters for the future.

Through four preseason games, Glennon completed 33 of 70 passes for 397 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

In the fourth preseason game, in which Glennon started, he completed 7 of 16 passes for 63 passing yards and an interception.

The Bucs have yet to comment on the report. They face the 1-2 Arizona Cardinals this week at home.
