Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Anthony Gaitor will return to his hometown of Miami to join the Miami Dolphins. The former Miami Northwestern and FIU standout signed with the team Wednesday, a move that reunites him with former Bucs director of player personnel, Dennis Hickey.
The news was first reported by the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Omar Kelly, and was confirmed through a source close to the situation.
Gaitor, a former seventh-round draft pick by the Bucccaneers in 2011, was waived two weeks ago. With Brent Grimes and Cortland Finnegan essentially solidified as starters, he’ll likely compete for the Dolphins’ nickel cornerback spot and should contribute on special teams.
In 12 career games between 2011 and 2012, Gaitor recorded 11 tackles and five pass break-ups. He missed the entire 2013 season with a torn ACL in his knee, and in the previous year, he was placed on injured reserve-designated to return with a hamstring strain.
The Dolphins began OTAs yesterday with their second scheduled practice today.
