Update: (6:00 p.m. ET) The Chargers announced that Eddie Royal has been diagnosed with the a bruised lung. He is also being evaluated for a concussion. The team said all subsequent tests were negative.
San Diego Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal fell hard to the ground during practice Saturday and left in an ambulance after having difficulty breathing.
“Eddie obviously went up for a ball, caught the ball, landed on his back. [He had] shortness of breath, and a little bit of a hard time breathing so we’re going to take him to the hospital and to check him out,” said Chargers head coach Mike McCoy after practice.
He left the field with the training staff, and according to Tom Krasovic of UT-San Diego, collapsed on his way to the locker room.
It happened during one of the Chargers’ last team-periods, according to McCoy.
An ambulance arrived at Chargers Park minutes later and came out onto the field to transport him.
He was placed on a board, partially upright, and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The NFL has seen a number of injuries during training camp this year, but none involving a player having respiratory issues.
