The NFL’s opening week is in the books and I’d like to say I knocked some of the rust off with my picks. Although an 8-7-1 record isn’t anything to write home about, it’s not losing and we’ll take it. The hope is top improve in Week 2.
New Orleans -3.5 @ Tampa Bay
I’m not going to make the “there’s a better chance of Josh Freeman missing the game by oversleeping than the Bucs winning this game” joke. Because it’s a 4:05 start. Saints 31, Bucs 20.
San Diego +7.5 vs. Philadelphia
Are we overreacting to one impressive Monday Night Football performance? Maybe, but I don’t think San Diego can stop Chip Kelly’s offense on a short week. Eagles 31, Chargers 14.
Cleveland +7 @ Baltimore
The Ravens have never lost to the Browns under the Harbaugh/Flacco administration (10-0). The landscape of the NFL is changing and the Browns will play a good, close game before eventually losing. Ravens 24, Browns 20.
Tennessee +10 @ Houston
The Titans have a terrible quarterback and the Texans have a serviceable quarterback. That will win the Texans the game….However the Titans defense is pretty good and will keep this one in range. Texans 20, Titans 12.
Miami +3 @ Indianapolis
The Colts have a great quarterback and not a whole bunch else. The Dolphins have a great defense and limited pieces on offense. Upset Special!!! Dolphins 18, Colts 17.
Carolina -3 @ Buffalo
The Panthers have a very good defensive line and the Bills have a very well paid defensive line. I’ll take talent over paycheck. Panthers 24, Bills 17.
St. Louis +7 @ Atlanta
The temptation to pick an Upset Special here is great but I just can’t pull the trigger. Falcons 24, Rams 20.
Washington +7 @ Green Bay
The Packers played a very good game last week and lost to a great 49ers team. This time they return home and play a less than 100% RG3 and a Redskins defense still reeling after Monday night. Packers 34, Redskins 21.
Dallas +3 @ Kansas City
I understand that the Chiefs got better in the offseason and improved at head coach and quarterback. I also understand that I’m getting the better team in Dallas with points. Cowboys 24, Chiefs 21.
Minnesota +6 @ Chicago
The Vikings are simply not a very good football team. The Bears have an upgraded offensive line, head coach and tight end. Bears 27, Vikings 10.
Detroit -2 @ Arizona
This game feels like a Las Vegas trap game and it might be, but I’m going to fall right in. Lions 24, Cardinals 20.
Jacksonville +6 @ Oakland
The Jaguars are starting Chad Henne at quarterback. He stinks. But the Oakland Raiders shouldn’t cover a 6-point spread. Raiders 20, Jaguars 16.
Denver -4.5 @ N.Y. Giants
The Broncos looked like world-beaters last Thursday night. The Giants turned the ball over 6 times on Sunday night. The Giants play best when their backs are against the wall and they will keep this thing close. Broncos 35, Giants 32.
San Francisco +3 @ Seattle
I believe the 49ers are the better team with the better quarterback, so why am I picking the Seahawks? Because nobody wins in Seattle, seemingly ever. Seahawks 24, 49ers 17.
