Bucs-Patriots Live Blog

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-2) are at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough today to take on the New England Patriots (2-0). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and the game can be seen on Fox Sports. Keep checking this live blog for updates throughout the game.

(Note: To recap the game, start from the bottom and work your way up)

4:00 p.m. After taking four shots in the end zone, Josh Freeman and the offense fail to score a touchdown in a game for the first time since Week 15 last year. Final score 23-3. Bucs fall to 0-3 .

3:46 p.m. Former Bucs running back LeGarrette Blount just ripped a 23-yard run. He now has 10 carries for 56 yards today. I’m not sure how many fans are still watching. This defense is tired.

3:37 p.m. The Patriots are well on their way to 3-0 , extending their lead 23-3 thanks to a 33-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski.

3:15 p.m. Vincent Jackson is still out with a rib injury. His return is listed as questionable.

3:09 p.m. Rookie defensive tackle Akeem Spence sacked Brady for a 6-yard loss to set up the third-and-19. Safety Mark Barron failed to wrap up Michael Hoomanawanui, resulting in a 16-yard gain. Gostkowski drilled a 46-yard field goal, giving the Patriots a 20-3 lead.

3:02 p.m. The Bucs go three-and-out after Barron’s pick, although it saved what would have been a touchdown. Vincent Jackson is on the sideline wearing a baseball cap. He has been replaced by kick returner Eric Page.

2:57 p.m. The Bucs gave up a 46-yard run up the gut by Brandon Bolden, but countered the damage with an interception in the end zone on third-and-goal by second-year safety Mark Barron. It was Barron’s first pick of the season.

2:50 p.m. Josh Freeman was sacked for the third time today. Both Mike Williams and Vincent Jackson appear to be battling some injuries. Jackson is having his ribs examined by the training staff.

2:33 p.m. The momentum the Bucs offense had going seems to have shifted. Josh Freeman was picked off by former Bucs teammate Aqib Talib, who undercut Vincent Jackson. Talib’s pick set up a 53-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski, giving the Patriots a 17-3 just before halftime. It was Gostkowski’s eighth-career field goal from 50-plus yards, tying a franchise record set by Adam Vinatieri.

2:22 p.m. The Bucs’ early luck defending the red zone this season may have run out. Rookie Johnthan Banks was beaten on a 5-yard touchdown pass  from Brady to Thompkins for his second touchdown of the game. Safety Dashon Goldson was flagged for pass interference on third-and-5 at the Tampa Bay 45 on that drive. Brady also converted on third-and-1 with a quarterback sneak. The Patriots now have a 14-3 lead.

2:08 p.m. Perhaps Bucs head coach Greg Schiano, who’s been rather conservative in his play-calling, was trying a page out of his mentor, Bill Belichick’s book. Schiano and the Bucs went for it on fourth-and-1 with Doug Martin, but Martin was stuffed by Brandon Spikes and Alfonzo Dennard. Patriots take over at the New England 38.

1:56 p.m. Brady have now found a rhythm, with Brady hitting receiver Aaron Dobson on a 15-yard completion before successfully converting on fourth-and-2. Brady then found Kenbrell Thompkins mismatched against Adrian Clayborn for a 16-yard touchdown. Thompkins got by safety Dashon Goldson on the play too. Patriots now lead 7-3.

1:45 p.m. Mike Williams took a short pass across the middle for a 12-yard pickup, setting up a first down. Williams appeared to injure his knee on the play. He left the field and returned just a few plays, in time for Freeman to look for him on fourth-and-5 at the New England 34. The Patriots now take over at their own 34-yard line.

1:38 p.m. The Patriots have gone three-and-out on the first three possessions. It’s early, but not exactly what you’re used to seeing from a Bill Belichick squad. The Bucs will begin their third possession at the Tampa Bay 45 yard line.

1:23 p.m. The Bucs managed to get into the red zone again, stalling at the 12. Lindell made his 30-yard field goal attempt. The Bucs lead 3-0. Freeman and his receivers look much more in-sync.

1:23 p.m. Quarterback Josh Freeman is getting the match-up he wants in Aqib Talib on Vincent Jackson, with Jackson leaping into the air for a 19-yard completion. Freeman is 6 of 9 so far today for 84 passing yards. The Bucs are also getting Doug Martin involved a lot in the passing game today. He was targeted twice and had an excellent 13-yard catch.

1:16 p.m. The Bucs may be on the lookout for another kicker. The Buccaneer offense fell just shy of the third down mark on the opening possession, stalling at the New England 20. Rian Lindell’s 38-yard attempt sailed wide right. He also missed a 47-yard attempt last week.

1:07 p.m. The Bucs won the toss but elected to defer. On the first play from scrimmage, Tom Brady threw a screen to Brandon Boldin for a 12-yard gain. Bucs Defensive tackle Gary Gibson was injured on the play. He is being tended to by members of the team’s medical staff. He left the field under his own power. The Bucs forced a three-and-out with a sack split between Lavonte David and Mark Barron. That gives David 3.0 sacks for the season.

12:00 p.m. Tight end Rob Gronkowski and  wide receiver Danny Amendola are both inactive today for the Patriots. Bucs tight ends Tom Crabtree and Luke Stocker are also out. Bucs left guard Carl Nicks will start. Here is a full list of inactives:
