The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added yet another member to Lovie Smith’s coaching staff today in Gill Byrd, a former All-Pro defensive back who will coach cornerbacks in Tampa.
Byrd was a member of Smith’s staff in Chicago, where he started as a defensive quality control coach in 2006, worked his way up to defensive backs coach in 2007 and served as safeties coach from 2008-2012.
Prior to Chicago, Byrd was a defensive assistant in St. Louis from 2003-2004 and an assistant secondary coach in 2006.
Prior to that, Byrd served as the Green Bay Packers executive director/player programs and community affairs for three seasons, from 1999-2001.
After nine seasons, he retired as San Diego’s all-time leader in interceptions (42) and interceptions return yards (546), both of which records he still holds. He was inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame in 1998.
Byrd’s son is cornerback Buffalo Bills cornerback Jairus Byrd, a three-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection whose 22 interceptions since joining the league in 2009 are the second-most in the NFL.
