Could the NFL change the extra point rule? [1]

Could the NFL change the extra point rule?

At first I thought that it might just be a throw away line but it wasn’t. When the NFL Commissioner speaks everyone listens.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said there is a proposal under consideration to eliminate the normally routine point-after attempts.

“The extra point is almost automatic,” Goodell said, according to NFL.com. “I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd (1,256 of 1,261). So it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.”

Four of the five failed extra-point tries were blocked.

One proposal being floated as a replacement would be to give seven points for a touchdown with the option to run what is now a two-point conversion play for an eighth point. It might be the one that Goodell pitches to his owners because he likes the idea.

“There’s one proposal in particular that I’ve heard about,” Goodell said. “It’s automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six.”

Goodell did not say when such a change might take place but no doubt there will be plenty of talk next week about it during Super Bowl week.
