NFL: The Week That Was – Week 10

There have already been 12 overtime games so far in 2012, one shy of the 2011 mark (13). Week 10 featured two overtime games, including the NFL’s first tie game since November 16, 2008 (Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals, 13-13). The San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams finished in a 24-24 tie on Sunday, while the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 16-13 in overtime on Monday night.
WILD MONDAY: The PITTSBURGH STEELERS defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 16-13 in overtime on Monday Night Football. The win marked the Steelers’ 15th consecutive home win on Monday Night Football, the longest such streak in NFL history. The streak began on October 19, 1992 when the Steelers defeated Cincinnati, 20-0.
HIGH SCORING SUNDAY: Teams combined to score 614 points in 12 games on Sunday, the second-most in a single day with 12 games played in NFL history. The previous high was October 25, 1987 when teams combined to score 628 points in Week 6.
PASSING SUCCESS: There were seven 300-yard passing performances in Week 10, bringing the season total to 80. The 80 individual 300-yard passing games are the most through Week 10 of any NFL season.
WHAT A KICK: In the interest of player health and safety, the spot of the kickoff was moved up five yards from the 30- to the 35-yard line prior to the 2011 season. But there has been plenty of excitement on kickoffs since. The league-wide kickoff-return average of 24.0 yards is on pace to be the highest of any season in NFL history, which would eclipse the previous record set last season (23.8).
Baltimore’s JACOBY JONES had a 105-yard kick-return touchdown in the Ravens’ 55-20 win over Oakland. Jones is the first player in NFL history with two career 105+ yard kick-return touchdowns. Jones, who tied the NFL record with a 108-yard kick-return touchdown in Week 6, has recorded both 105-yard KR-TDs in a span of four games.
PO(INT) OF RETURN: Teams have combined to score 39 interception-return touchdowns through Week 10, the most INT-TD returns through Week 10 of any season.
Five players – Indianapolis cornerback DARIUS BUTLER (11 yards), Dallas cornerback BRANDON CARR (47), Denver cornerback TONY CARTER (40), Tampa Bay rookie cornerback LEONARD JOHNSON (83) and Tennessee linebacker COLIN MC CARTHY (49) – returned interceptions for touchdowns in Week 10.
TITAN TURNAROUND: The TENNESSEE TITANS earned their fourth victory of the season in Week 10 as they defeated the Miami Dolphins, 37-3. In Week 9, the Titans suffered a 51-20 loss to the Chicago Bears. The Titans became the first team since 2003 to win a game by at least 30 points (34 points, Week 10) following a 30+ point (31, Week 9) loss the week before. In 2003, the San Francisco 49ers loss to the Baltimore Ravens 44-6 in Week 13 and defeated the Arizona Cardinals 50-14 in Week 14.
TIGHT SOUTH: On Sunday, the New Orleans Saints defeated division rival Atlanta, 31-27, handing the Falcons their first loss of 2012. Tight ends JIMMY GRAHAM of the Saints had 146 receiving yards with two touchdowns and TONY GONZALEZ of the Falcons had 122 receiving yards with two touchdowns. It marked the first time in NFL history that two tight ends had at least 120 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the same game.
Gonzalez now has 101 career touchdown receptions, the most by a tight end and the sixth-most in NFL history. With his two touchdowns in Week 10, Gonzalez broke a tie with Pro Football Hall of Famer DON HUTSON (99) and moved past Hall of Famer STEVE LARGENT (100) and TIM BROWN (100).
MILE-HIGH MANNING: Denver quarterback PEYTON MANNING completed 27 of 38 passes (71.1 percent) for 301 yards and one touchdown in the Broncos’ 36-14 win at Carolina. Manning has 420 touchdown passes and tied Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO for the second-most in NFL history.
