NFL Pro Day: What Will Clowney Prove?
Jadeveon Clowney is the best player in the 2014 NFL Draft. Have you heard that before?
There's no doubt that the defensive end had an impressive 4.53 second 40-yard dash and he's an explosive threat on defense. He's 6'6" and 266 lbs of intimidation who is showcasing his talents at South Carolina's Pro Day Wednesday. But will Wednesday's activities prove that he really is the best?
Even Tony Dungy recognizes that Clowney is a freak of nature, physically and when he's drafted, he will become one of the NFL's leading pass-rushers. According to USA Today, Dungy says there is no one like him and the Texans would be mistaken if they don't take him.
"There is no one physically like Clowney in this draft. If Houston wanted to make this a dynamic defense and really put pressure on people, I'd take Clowney first."
So, what's the problem? GMs and coaches are concerned about the type of player that Clowney is. If he's drafted, will he be the player that had only three sacks and less than 12 tackles for losses last year? Or will he be another Lawrence Taylor?
That is what Wednesday is all about. Clowney will need to prove that his size and strength matches his motivation and skill set to make big plays. Luckily, not all coaches are worried about his work ethic. Houston coach Bill O'Brien told USA Today that after studying the former Gamecock, he's confident that Clowney is a guy that plays hard and produces well.
Clowney is a threat on the field, end of story. Will he be a game changer? He could be. Today is his day to prove it.
