The New York Jets may be the NFL’s most polarizing team. Whether it’s head coach Rex Ryan making Super Bowl promises, to trading for football’s ultimate pop diva Tim Tebow (only to watch him rot away and get frustrated on the bench) to driving their fans bat-*#5$ crazy by trading their best player in Darrelle Revis while not selecting an offensive player with either of their first-round draft picks to help the league’s 30th ranked offense, the New York Jets cut a rug to the beat of their own percussion section.
The Jets are turning over yet a new leaf by parting ways with assistant GM Scott Cohen and director of player personnel JoJo Wooden, according to this USA Today report.
Our take: The Jets are in need of a shakeup throughout the roster and front office as much as any team in football. However good firing the guy who gave Mark Sanchez his guaranteed money extension was, hiring the guy who traded a second-round pick and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie plus giving a wealthy contract to quarterback Kevin Kolb may not be the most intelligent move.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is on the shortest short list of elite players at the most important position in sports. The Packers rewarded him in this offseason with a 5-year, $110 million contract. It may not be that arguable that he is the best in the game but who follows him? Is it Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or possibly Andrew Luck? Pete Prisco weighed in with his list of the Top 100 NFL Players.
Our take: Prisco has many of the same players I would put in my Top 100 but to put Peyton Manning over Tom Brady is just bullheaded and ridiculous. Brady has always done more with less and you can trust him in big games….always. Manning….well….his 9-10 career playoff record should exclude him from the Top 5 of any best ever list.
The Jacksonville Jaguars may be the most misunderstood franchise in professional sports. If you listen to popular media vernacular, the team can’t sell a single ticket and the fanbase are all Florida Gators homers who wear Tim Tebow pajamas. Alfie Crow penned a brilliant rundown of how the fanbase is doing more than surviving through tough seasons without any gimmicks.
Our take: The Jaguars sold 96.8% of their available seats last season and haven’t had a blackout in nearly four years, despite the team having one of the worst records in the NFL over that time. The front office is new and the attitude is changed and the team needs anything but a third-string clipboard holder who has prima donna tendencies and can’t throw a football into the Atlantic Ocean from Jax Beach. Tebow should prove himself in Canada before the media and ignorant fans try to force him onto a team with few attendance issues.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have largely had a defensive identity throughout much of their existence. Greats like Lee Roy Selmon, Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks are the most household names despite having their fair share of on-field disappointment. In 2002, everything came together for Tampa Bay as they received just enough offense to go with that dominant defense and rode it straight through to a Super Bowl title. One of the principle participants roaming the secondary was cornerback Ronde Barber who transitioned from when the Bucs were the “Yucks” to Super Bowl glory and back to a perennial playoff abstainer.
Our take: Ronde Barber was one of the game’s best, but certainly not a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Barber was never the best player at his position and benefitted from playing with an outstanding defensive line for much of his career. If John Lynch doesn’t get in the Hall of Fame, Barber will have a very good shot at some point in the future.
