NFL Draft Recap: Bucs, Jaguars, Dolphins
Posted By Sports Talk Florida On April 30, 2013 @ 12:23 PM In 1040 Sports,main feature,NFL | No Comments
Players selected: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State (2nd round), Mike Glennon, QB, N.C. State (3rd round), Akeem Spence, DT, Illinois (4th round), William Gholston, DE, Michigan St. (4th round), Steven Means, DE, Buffalo (5th round), Mike James, RB, Miami (FL) (6th round)
Notes: The Bucs were able to address some team needs while still managing to get solid value with many of their selections. Banks in round two is a boom or bust selection as he can defend against some of the league’s bigger receivers but lacks strength…..Glennon gives the team some insurance in case Josh Freeman has a setback in his development in a contract year…..Spence should immediately compete for the starting job at defensive tackle next to Gerald McCoy…..Gholston is a high-energy player who figures to be in the teams rotation at defensive end…..Means is expected to contribute on special teams but could surprise…..James will be in competition with Jeff Demps and Michael Smith for the backup job to Doug Martin.
Best value: William Gholston could be a great contributor for a late fourth-round pick.
Bust potential: In a perfect world, Mike Glennon will never see the field in a game that counts. If that’s the case, why spend a third-round draft pick?
Players selected: Dion Jordan, OLB, Oregon (1st round), Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State (2nd round), Dallas Thomas, T, Tennessee (3rd round), Will Davis, DB, Utah State (3rd round), Jelani Jenkins, LB, Florida (4th round), Dion Sims, TE, Michigan State (4th round), Mike Gillislee, RB, Florida (5th round), Caleb Sturgis, K, Florida, (5th round), Don Jones, DB, Arkansas State (7th round)
Best value: Dion Jordan may have went off the board with the third-overall pick, but the Dolphins gave up just a third-round pick to move up nine spots to get him.
Bust potential: Will Davis was selected earlier than many thought and he may be a little light to start at cornerback.
Players selected: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A & M (1st round), John Cyprien, S, Florida International (2nd round), Dwayne Gratz, CB, Connecticut (3rd round), Ace Sanders, WR, South Carolina (4th round), Denard Robinson, RB/WR, Michigan (5th round), Josh Evans, S, Florida (6th round), Jeremy Harris, DB, New Mexico State (7th round), Demetrius McCray, DB, Appalachian State.
Notes: When you finish with a 2-14 record, your team has many needs. The Jaguars were able to address several of which by selecting either first or second in six of the seven rounds. Luke Joeckel was the top player on many draft boards and should be a bookend tackle for years to come….John Cyprien is a tremendous athlete that will start immediately…..Dwayne Gratz represents a major need for the team as they lost three of their four starters in the secondary in the offseason…..Ace Sanders will give the Jaguars a dimension on special teams they’ve been lacking for years…..Denard Robinson improves team speed and could line up at both running back and wide receiver…..Josh Evans could play immediately in “heavy nickel” packages while being groomed to start opposite Cyprien…..Harris and McCray will compete on special teams and in nickel and dime packages.
Best value: John Cyprien could become an impact safety out of the mold of Ed Reed.
Bust potential: Luke Joeckel will start immediately at right tackle but even if he is solid, the second-overall selection is not a place where good teams select their right tackles.
