New York Yankees Turn Triple Play On Rays

New York Yankees Turn Triple Play Against Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays entered the bottom of the second inning trailing the Yankees 4-0 and looking to start a rally against CC Sabathia. Evan Longoria led off the inning with a double and Wil Myers walked to bring Sean Rodriguez to the plate.

The hope for a rally was short circuited in the quickest of ways as Rodriguez sent a grounder to Yangervis Solarte who stepped on third and fired to Brian Roberts at second who turned and threw to Scott Sizemore at first for the triple play.

It was the third triple play the Rays have hit into in their franchise history and twice Sean Rodriguez has been the batter.

The Rays hit into their first triple play on June 11, 2006 versus the Kansas City Royals on June 11, 2006.  Here is ESPN.com’s description of the Triple Play:

With Aubrey Huff on third and Rocco Baldelli on first, Russell Branyan flied out to David DeJesus in shallow center. Huff came home on the play. Baldelli attempted to take second on the throw home, but was thrown out by pitcher Scott Elarton (1-8), who was backing up the throw to the plate.

Angel Berroa tagged out Baldelli and then threw to Mark Teahen at third base as the Royals claimed Huff had left early. Third base umpire Bob Davidson agreed with the appeal and ruled Huff out.

On June 16, 2011 Sean Rodriguez hit a groundball to Jed Lowrie at 3rd who stepped on the bag and threw to Dustin Pedroia at second who fired to Adrian Gonzalez to complete the triple play.
