New Twists in Penn State Scandal

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A former Penn State graduate assistant cited by a grand jury report as claiming he saw an ex-assistant football coach sexually abusing a young boy in a campus locker room shower says in an email he made sure the act was stopped and then went to police — contradicting what the report says.
Mike McQueary’s comments were made available to The Associated Press in an email. They appeared to add more confusion to a scandal that has enveloped the university and resulted in the firing of head coach Joe Paterno, the ousting of president Graham Spanier (SPAN’-yur) and charges of perjury against the athletic director and a senior vice president.
In other Penn State developments:
— Interim coach Tom Bradley says he was too busy preparing for this weekend’s Big Ten game at Ohio State and didn’t watch Monday night’s TV interview with former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who proclaimed his innocence. The Nittany Lions fell from 12th to 21st in the AP poll after losing to Nebraska on Saturday in Bradley first game as interim coach.
— An Associated Press analysis shows former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is in line for a pension of more than $500,000 a year. The AP examined records from the State Employees’ Retirement System. Paterno’s pension records obtained Tuesday show he’s credited with more than 60 years in the system. That means he’s eligible for a pension equal to 100 percent of the average of his three highest-salary years. Paterno’s average pay was $554,000 between 2008 and last year.
— Ousted Penn State University president Graham Spanier (SPAN’-yur) has resigned from the board at U.S. Steel. And the Department of Defense has accepted his resignation from the board of advisers of the Naval Postgraduate School.
