When Rob Hennigan the Orlando Magic General Manager drafted Victor Oladipo third overall in this past NBA draft, he knew his veteran guard Jameer Nelson would play a big part in the development of his future star.
“Nelson is a leader and we are lucky as an organization to have him help out with our younger guys,” Hennigan told me during NBA Summer League.
While Nelson may not be the player he was in 2008-2009 when he averaged 16.7 points per game and 5.4 assists for the Magic, his off the court leadership and mentoring will help the young guys like Oladipo and Maurice Harkless this season.
Nelson was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 2004 before being dealt to Orlando. He has played his entire career with the Magic and hopes to keep it that way.
“I love this city and hope that I can continue to play in front of the best fans in the NBA,” Nelson said.
Nelson’s easy going and playful personality in the locker room will keep the mood of the players light and help while things may get tough for the rebuilding franchise.
