Now that the Orlando Magic have the number four overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft along with a young core, they should be thinking playoffs next season and not lottery.
This will be the second straight season the Magic will have a lottery pick, selecting Victor Oladipo with the second pick last season.
Orlando needs a point guard, and Australian sensation Dante Exum seems like the logical choice. This would give the franchise a fresh look with all signs pointing to them parting ways with Jameer Nelson.
With the Eastern Conference so weak, it’s prime for the Magic to make a run at the playoffs. This past season Orlando finished with a (23-59) record, second to last in the NBA only behind the Milwaukee Bucks.
Now that the Miami Heat have been dethroned as champions, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony are uncertain where they may play next season and with the Indiana Pacers still looking for their identity; the Magic have a shot to make a major leap.
A sub .500 record could get them into a seventh or eighth seed, not to mention one of the best young rosters in the NBA.
The question will be, can head coach Jacque Vaughn get the best out of his guys? It’s no secret some teams have first time coaches long enough to build a winning roster, and then add a veteran coach to take them the extra step.
Vaughn has an opportunity to show his ability to coach a young roster while winning in the process. It will be interesting to see what he and his staff can do this upcoming season.
