Orlando Magic Roster Preview: Andrew Nicholson

Andrew_Nicholson_2Orlando Magic’s young forward Andrew Nicholson made a lot of improvements during his rookie season.

During his rookie campaign, Nicholson averaged 7.8 points per game (ppg.), 3.4 rebounds per game (rpg.) in 16.7 minutes per game (minpg.) over 75 games.

Nicholson made his NBA debut on Nov. 2, 2012 against the Denver Nuggets, scoring two points, pulling down two rebounds, recorded one block and one assists in 11 minutes.

The young 23-year-old continued to come off the bench until mid December. On Dec. 19, 2012 forward Glen Davis sprained his left shoulder giving Nicholson the opportunity to start.  In the 28 starts he made, Nicholson averaged 10.3 ppg., 4.2 rpg. and logged in 21.9 minpg.

Throughout the month of January the young forward kept on improving. In Feburary, Nicholson was chosen to replace an injured Andre Drummond in the Rising Stars Challenge. The rookie was on Shaq’s roster, while teammate Nikola Vucevic was on team Chuck.

Nicholson participated in the Orlando Summer League, which gave him a chance to play with his new teammates Victor Oladipo and Romero Osby. He started all five games while averaging 10.8 ppg.,2.6 rpg. and 22.2 minpg.

With several forwards on the team, including Maurice Harkless, Tobias Harris and Glen Davis, Nicholson will have to fight for his minutes. With the surplus of forwards, it wouldn’t come to a surprise to some if the Magic packaged Nicholson in a trade at some point during the season.

General Manager Rob Hennigan drafted Nicholson 19th overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. The Magic and Nicholson agreed to a three-year deal worth $4.4 million.

The preseason is set to being on Oct. 9 when the Orlando Magic take on the New Orleans Pelicans in Jacksonville at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Tickets are on sale now and prices range from $15 to $250.

The Magic will start its 25th ‘Silver Season’ season on the road. They will face the Indiana Pacers (Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. ET) and Minnesota Timberwolves (Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. ET) before returning to the Amway for the season home opener against the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. ET.
