The weekend was full of action in Florida, so on this Monday February 24th, let’s recap what went down.
Even through rain and wrecks, Dale Earnhardt Jr. ended the only drought that mattered. He won the Daytona 500 for the second time, a decade after his first victory in the “Great American Race.”
Earnhardt snapped a 55-race winless streak Sunday night that dated to 2012. It ended a streak of futility at Daytona International Speedway, where he finished second in three of the previous four 500s.
Miami Heat Win
The Heat beat the Chicago Bulls without LeBron, 93-79.
Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade powered the team to a victory over the Chicago Bulls on Sunday. Since James broke his nose in Thursday’s win at Oklahoma City, his teammates had to pick up the slack. Reserves like Chris Andersen, Michael Beasley and Ray Allen helped the Heat pull away in the second half.
Magic Lose to Raptors
Kyle Lowry scored 28 points, DeMar DeRozan had 24 and the Toronto Raptors beat Orlando 105-90 Sunday night, handing the Magic their 15th straight road loss.
Terrence Ross scored 16 and Amir Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds before leaving with a sprained right ankle in the Raptors’ fifth victory in six games.
Florida State Basketball Beat Pitt
FSU’s stifling defense keys the win against Pittsburgh. Okaro White scored 22 points and Florida State beat Pittsburgh 71-66 on Sunday.
Ian Miller added 19 points and Aaron Thomas 14 for the Seminoles (16-11, 7-8 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have won two of their past three.
Lamar Patterson led Pitt (20-7, 8-6) with 22 points. The Panthers have lost three in a row and five of their past seven. They are in danger of falling out of contention for the NCAA tournament after winning 15 of 16 games to start the season.
Florida State led 37-31 at halftime. After making 13 of 24 shots in the first half, the Seminoles started the second half 1 for 11 from the field and went 7 ½ minutes without a field goal. Despite those struggles, Florida State never lost the lead.
Florida Basketball Rolls Past Ole Miss
The Gators beat Ole Miss, 75-71 Saturday and now there is talk surrounding their ranking in the Top 25 AP Poll. An updated Top 25 list will be released Monday.
The Gators will face Vanderbilt Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
