Giancarlo Stanton Hits 22nd Homer In Loss

The Marlins offense struggled to get back on track to start the second half tonight as they scored just one run in a 9-1 loss to the Giants.

Nathan Eovaldi got the start but this would be one he hopes to leave behind him as he allowed eight earned runs on nine hits – including two home runs – one walk, and five strikeouts over four innings.

Madison Bumgarner opposed him, however, and he was on point allowing just one run over six innings en route to striking out seven Miami hitters. The one mistake he made was to a man named Giancarlo Stanton, as he blasted his NL-leading 22nd home run in the sixth inning of this one.

With his performance tonight, Stanton is now 8-13 (.615) with 5 doubles and a home run against Bumgarner in his career.

The Giants scored two runs in both the second and third innings, but they did most of their damage in the fifth inning, scoring five runs – four of which came off Eovaldi before he could record an out.

Hunter Pence doubled to lead off the inning, Joe Panik singled to move him to third, Buster Posey brought in Pence with an RBI single, and Pablo Sandoval brought both Panik and Posey home with his 12th home run of the season, a blast to right field.

The Marlins mustered just three hits – all singles – off the Giants’ pen the rest of the game.

This was a tough loss for the Marlins who hoped to get off to a fast start in the second half, and they now sit 8.5 games back of the Braves for first place in the division.

They’ll need to turn things around quick if they plan on being in the playoff conversation come September.
