The Marlins dropped their fourth consecutive game today against the A’s by a final score of 4-3.
Andrew Heaney got the start, just the third of his Major League career, and it was smooth sailing up until two outs in the fifth inning.
Heading into the top half of the sixth inning, Heaney had a 1-0 lead (on an RBI triple by Christian Yelich) and had allowed just four hits and struck out three.
Heaney had a strong start to the sixth inning, as well, retiring the opposing pitcher Tommy Milone and Craig Gentry.
With two outs, however, Alberto Callaspo, Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Donaldson all singled to tie the game at one.
Nate Freiman then stepped to the plate in his season debut with the A’s and gave them all they would need in this one:
The Marlins would answer back with a pinch-hit solo home run by Marcell Ozuna, the first of his career and second by the Marlins this season.
The fish wouldn’t be able to complete the comeback in this one, falling to the A’s 4-3 to complete the sweep.
On a good note, the Marlins bullpen continued its strong performance lately with three perfect innings from the seventh inning on.
With the loss, the Marlins are now 8-4 in Interleague Play this season and 18-12 in one-run games.
Tomorrow the Marlins welcome the Phillies in to town for a three-game set starting Tuesday as they hope to turn their luck around.
The last time they faced the Phillies, though, they lost 5-3 in fourteen inning thanks to a Chase Utley two-run walk-off home run and the team hasn’t been able to find a victory since then.
