Chris Archer did not receive a decision in the Rays 1-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox but his six scoreless innings while striking out 11 played  a big role.

After the game he was quick to credit his teammates for the support through thick and thin. In last nights game he made a career high 119 pitches, tied a career high with 11 strike outs, and the Rays improved to 16-2 since the beginning of 2013 when he pitches 6 or more innings.

Despite being at 103 pitches after five innings Joe Maddon had the confidence to send him out there for the sixth inning. “He had great stuff tonight. Great fastball and a great slider and he wasn’t losing anything.” Maddon said. “It was a matter of him just missing the strike zone on occasion. He had a very short leash but he was able to get through it.”

Maddon said it was a growth experience for Archer’s confidence and it will bleed into future starts. “A mind once stretched has a difficult time going back to its original size or place.”
