Texas Rangers Considering Russell Martin

As the Rangers try to resolve their uncertain catcher situation for 2013, the club is considering Yankees free agent Russell Martin as an option behind the plate, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Martin, 29, struggled to get on base last year with the Yankees, hitting .211 and posting a .311 on-base percentage, but he also hit a career-high 21 homers and had a .713 OPS, significantly higher than the marks posted by Geovany Soto (.591) or Yorvit Torrealba (.643) for the Rangers last year.

Martin also started 116 games behind the plate for New York last year, marking the sixth time in his seven-year career that he’s caught at least 1,000 innings in a season.
