Navy is expected to announce soon that it will join the Big East Conference for football in 2015, a source said Monday.
Navy, one of three service academies in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, presently plays as an independent.
The Big East announced Tuesday morning that it will hold a 3 p.m. ET teleconference to address league membership.
Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk previously has said that scheduling and bowl and television contracts would make the transition from independent status to a conference more complicated than expected.
The Big East, hit by the departures of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC, and TCU and West Virginia to the Big 12, will add Boise State and San Diego State for football and SMU, Central Florida and Houston for all sports, starting in 2013.
