Update: Bob Rosi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports the deal has bee finalized and a news conference is scheduled for Wednesday.


The Pittsburgh Pirates are expected to hire Mike Johnston as their new head coach, ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reports. No deal has been finalized as of Wednesday morning, but LeBrun says that a deal is close.

Johnston has served as GM and coach of the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks in the 2008-09 season. Prior to coaching them, he was an assistant coach for the LA Kings and before that he served on the Vancouver Canucks coaching roster.

He will replace Dan Bylsma, if hired.
