After the Rays defeated the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon Joe Maddon was asked who his starter for Sunday would be. He said it was a fluid situation.

There was a meeting in Maddon’s office prior to allowing the media in to do the post game which included Andrew Friedman.

There are a number of possibilities.

The Rays could go with the easy choice Roberto Hernandez but with the office meeting and holding off on naming him leads me to believe that it probably will not be Roberto.

It could be another starter currently on the Rays 40-man roster like Mike Montgomery or Enny Romero.

Another intriguing possibility is J.D. Martin who has major league experience but is not on the Rays current 40 man roster.

In order to make room for J.D. Martin and Jesse Crain (currently on the 60-day disabled list) the Rays have a number of roster moves they could make.

They could promote Hak-Ju Lee and place him on the 60-day disabled list.

They could designate Roberto Hernandez for assignment.

They could designate Jeff Beliveau or Freddy Guzman as well

Joe Maddon gave his clue to us: “It will someone in the bullpen now or someone who is not here now.”

The starter announcement is expected some time tonight.
