Erik Bedard pitched last season with Houston. He could be a starter or the long man in the Rays bull pen.

The Rays have released pitcher Erik Bedard, tweets Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Bedard had a 6.88 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in 17.0 innings this spring for Tampa Bay.

Bedard played for the Houston Astros last season and had a 4.59 ERA in 151 innings over 26 starts and six relief appearances.

Rays manager Joe Maddon says Bedard will look for a big league job, but release doesn’t preclude him from returning to the Rays if not. He also said that Alex Colome’s suspension increases the Rays need for starting pitching depth.
