Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports the Rays have placed Yunel Escobar on the disabled list and are expected to announce a replacement Tuesday. He could return in ten days.
Escobar hasn’t played since leaving last Tuesday’s game. He went through a pre-game workout Monday and the Rays deemed he wasn’t throwing well enough.
“Nothing horrid,” Maddon said via the Tampa Bay Times. “He threw today, his biggest concern is just to let it go. He’s like a little bit concerned with that. I said listen, let’s not play that game. Let’s give you a couple days off because it’s a long season, we need you to be well. One of his major strengths is his arm strength, and his ability to throw well. So why would you want to lost that tool by trying to rush back right now.”
The Times reports the players who could be called up from Triple-A Durham include Vince Belnome, who is on the 40-man roster, and veterans Jayson Nix, Miek Fontenot and Wilson Betemit.
