Rays Matt Moore Named To All Star Squad

After leading the Rays to a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins to improve to 13-3 with a 3.44 ERA Matt Moore was notified that he had been  named to the 2013 All-Star squad replacing the Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish who was placed on the disabled list.

If he had not made the team he  would have been the first pitcher with 13 victories to not be named to an All Star team since 1985 when Rick Mahler was left out after going 13-7.

He had an inkling that he had made the team after a comment by Rays bench coach Davey Martinez in the 7th inning. He was getting  a drink of water and thought he heard Martinez say “way to go All-Star” as he walked by.

After the game he was approached by Jim Hickey  who told him that Joe Maddon wanted to see him and he replied, “what am I getting sent down?” He said it was his first managers office visit of his career including when he got called up to the majors from Triple A Durham.

From Rays Media Department:

At 24 years old he’ll be the 4th youngest Rays player to be named to an All-Star team behind Evan Longoria (22 years old and 23 years old), Scott Kazmir (22 years old), and Carl Crawford (22 years old).

He also becomes the 1oth player acquired by Andrew Friedman either via trade, draft, or free agency who have made their first all start team with the Rays joining Jason Bartlett, Matt Joyce, Evan Longoria, Dioner Navarro, Carlos Pena, David Price, Fernando Rodney, Rafael Soriano, and Ben Zobrist.

I am a fan of all sports but am most passionate about baseball. From the fanatical to analytical, nothing about the game escapes me. Being born and raised in Northeast Ohio I'm very familiar with the heartache and pain that sports can bring and hope that I bring some understanding of the other side to my coverage. I will focus mostly on baseball but also cover the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the most electric franchises in all of sports. Always willing to converse about any sport and have only one rule and that is be respectful at all times.
