For years NIKE, Adidas, Reebok and other sneaker companies have been sponsoring youth summer basketball camps. The players attending those camps have become known as a NIKE player, Adidas player or Reebok player and it is assumed that the colleges will get them to NIKE schools or Adidas schools or Reebok schools to play.
When University of Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino talks, television networks, sneaker companies and corporate leaders listen. Pitino complained that shoe companies need to get out of the youth basketball business.
Pitino may be right but he is the wrong person to deliver that message.
