Missed part of The Mariotti Show?
The Jay Mariotti Podcast for Thursday, August 14: Jake Plummer, the former NFL quarterback and new Pac-12 Network analyst, joins us to talk about Johnny Manziel’s future, Roger Goodell’s conduct decisions and why he left a stadium suite to watch a Broncos game by himself among the fans. Show topics: When the crusty, old men who have weakened baseball’s once-firm grip on America are gathering to decide baseball’s future, that’s depressing. The sport desperately needs to think young, fast and progressive in the 21st century, and here we’re stuck with the same old people — 80-year-old Bud Selig, 78-year-old Jerry Reinsdorf — politicking for next-commissioner candidates who only will perpetuate the same-old/same-old. Ugh. Isn’t there a young, dynamic candidate out there? Rob Manfred, Selig’s right-hand man, will succeed him in the end, and Manfred has helped achieve 19 years of labor peace and, albeit belatedly, launched the fight against PEDs. Still, any perpetuation of the Selig Era is not good. And anyone Reinsdorf wants — even Tom Werner, a successful TV producer in the day — doesn’t solve the problem of energizing the game by tapping into youthful demographics that no longer relate to a slow, old-man’s game. Reinsdorf, a bad owner and a bad guy, only cares about money. He wants Werner to launch battles against the union, which almost killed the sport in 1994 when Reinsdorf launched a labor impasse that led to a canceled World Series and a massive popularity dip. Go home, Jerry. Sports doesn’t need you. Tiger Woods finally made the right decision and bowed out of Ryder Cup consideration; now, he needs to focus on his health. An Arizona State football player announces he’s gay, and society has come so far on this issue that no one cares. Our college football preview begins with a look at the SEC Network and Tim Tebow’s role, and a look at the College Football Playoff selection committee and the political pitfalls that await.
