Duke basketball player Jabari Parker announced that he will be leaving Duke to enter the NBA draft. He says this was a very difficult decision, but he considered all of his options.
According to Sports Illustrated, Parker said that college introduced him to other interests like film and business, which is why he wants to graduate from the university.
In his statement, he wrote that his days as a student are not over.
“Today I sent my letter of intent to the NBA. That makes it official — my days as a Duke basketball player are over. But my days as a Duke student are not. I intend to graduate from Duke while I’m in the NBA. I was an honor student when I arrived at Duke, and I’d like to graduate as one.”
Parker went on to say that to most people, obtaining your degree while playing a professional sport us almost unheard of. But, he says that wants to do more than just play basketball.
“The fact is that I have many interests beyond basketball. I’d like to write a children’s book. I am interested in various business aspects of the entertainment industry. And I’d like to work with corporate America in one way or another. A college degree from Duke will help with each of these aspirations.”
After weighing his options for the past two years, Parker feels that this is the right move for him.
