As of right now Bill O’Brien is the head coach at Penn State and Greg Schiano is the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But that could change over the next week as a number of things continue to play out in Houston and State College.
The brain trust at Penn State knows that they have one of college football most sought after head coaching positions in the premier conference in the country. They also know that it is very likely that their present coach, Bill O’Brien who prior to coming to State College was former New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator, is in contract talks to be the next head coach of the Houston Texans.
Penn State is ready to move quickly if indeed O’Brien inks a deal to return to the NFL, this time as a head coach. PSU already has a short list of candidates and according to PennLive’s David Jones there have been at least three coaches on that list who have had their agent contact the university asking to be considered if indeed O’Brien does head south to Houston.
Jones, who stands by his story and his sources, wrote that NFL coaches Mike Munchak (Tennessee Titans), Greg Schiano (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Vanderbilt’s James Franklin are interested in the Penn State job, if there is an opening . As we know both Munchak and the Bucs head man Schiano have denied the report.
The Bucs coach told the media that despite his connection to Penn State where he served as an assistant coach in the 1990’s prior to becoming the head coach at Rutgers that he is not interested.
“You know, I heard that,” Schiano said of Jones’ report. “No, there’s zero truth to that. And I’ll make it clear: The only job I want is the one I have right now.”
Sports Talk Florida has reported that Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Penn State Athletic Director David Joyner is mulling a trip to Tampa in hopes of enticing Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano to return to the collegiate ranks. This is a fast moving story so keep checking here at Sports Talk Florida for the latest developments.
Any possible announcements from Houston on O’Brien taking the Houston job as welll as the Penn State job open after he takes the job won’t come before Monday at the very earliest.
