To all the Mom’s out there Happy Mothers Day. Here’s hoping the Rays deliver a big win for you.
Roberto Hernandez takes the mound today as the Rays look to extend the Ray win streak to five in row, finish off a sweep the San Diego Padres, and improve their record above .500 for the first time since the fifth game of the season. The last time Hernandez took the mound he departed after 6 innings with the Rays holding a 4-1 lead that the bullpen was unable to hold as the Rays lost 6-4.
Hernandez hopes to be the beneficiary of the suddenly surging Rays offense which since April 17th leads the majors in runs scored with 132 (5.7 R/G).
Back in action: Jose Molina suffered a bruised knee as a result of a foul ball which forced him to leave Thursday’s game.
Still Out: Desmond Jennings will miss his 3rd game in a row with a slight groin strain but should be back in the lineup Tuesday when the Rays host the Boston Red Sox at Tropicana Field.
Hernandez (1-4, 4.66 ERA) has pitched better than his line would indicate and has pitched into the 6th inning or later in 5 of his previous six starts.
The Padres lineup against Hernandez: Everth Cabrera (SS), Will Venable (RF), Chase Headley (3B), Carlos Quentin (DH), Yonder Alonso (1b), Chris Denorfia (CF), Jesus Guzman (LF), Alexi Amarista (2B), Nick Hundley (C).
The Padres counter with left hander Eric Stults (3-2, 4.50 ERA) making his 8th start on the season.
