Eric Decker Pays Thousands To Wear No. 87

Former Denver Broncos WR Eric Decker is sparing no change these days, despite having a newborn baby at home. Decker signed with the New York Jets as a free agent and he has wasted no time figuring out his attire on the field.

Decker has worn the number 87 on his jersey since his began his NFL career when the Broncos selected him as the 87th overall pick in 2010. Needless to say, the number eighty-seven is very important to him.

The number is so important that soon after Decker signed with the Jets, he asked teammate Jeff Cumberland about giving up the No. 87. Even though Cumberland has worn that jersey for the last four years, he agreed to give it up. The New York Daily News reports that Cumberland has agreed to give up the 87 jersey for $25,000 and a steak dinner.

Decker just signed a five-year, $36.25 million contract, so obviously $25,000 is essentially pocket change. Cumberland will now wear No. 85.

We can assume that a steak dinner for a player like Cumberland is also pretty expensive. Nonetheless, Decker’s number superstition lives on.

You can watch Decker’s reality TV show starring him and his new wife, Jessie James Decker, called Eric and Jessie: Game On, on E!
