ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone is sounding less confident about rookie quarterback EJ Manuel’s chances of starting in the season finale at New England this weekend.
Marrone sidestepped questions Monday about Manuel’s status after he missed a game because of a swollen left knee. Marrone calls it “a process,” adding he wants to get “a peek” at the player once the Bills (6-9) return to practice Tuesday.
That’s a switch from what Marrone said last week. In ruling Manuel out against Miami, Marrone felt “110 percent confident” he would play at New England.
If Manuel can’t play, backup Thad Lewis will be in line to make his fifth start of the season, and second in a row, after a 19-0 win over the Dolphins on Sunday.
